The latest news on the meteor that was supposed to hit the planet in 2029, is that it will just miss us. It's going to look as big as the Moon and be brighter because it will be closer. The bad news is that if it gets too close, the gravitational attraction of Earth will change its course just enough that it won't miss us the next time it comes around. This is all assuming that it doesn't get close to any other objects between now and then. I've known about this for five years and I just saw some updated news. Can you imagine how many hours have been spent checking and rechecking the math required to predict just how close this meteor was going to get.

The one after 2029 won't be a problem for me.

The comet was struck with a research projectile on July 4th, 2005.

Did you hear about it?

This was posted in May of 2004.

I just searched the web regarding this meteor and found your web-page. Do you have any more information on this – in the meantime?

Meteoroid, December 2004

Watching the news the other day I read on the bulletin line that a meteor was going to hit the earth around 2029. A large meteor was going to destroy the world in 25 years and all it got was two mentions on the bulletin line. Twice, that's all it was shown and never mentioned on the news.

Yesterday, the news reported that a rocket had been launched by scientists to blow up a meteor to study the how the Universe began. I saw pictures of the launch. The rocket is expected to hit the meteor around July 4th, and the explosion is expected to be able to be seen on earth. The rocket is expected to be traveling at 23,000 miles per hour at impact. I have to assume that is the speed relative to the earth, which would make the point of impact approximately 100 million miles away. That's just a little further than the Sun. The light from this explosion will take only a little over 10 minutes to reach the earth.

To quote Yogi Berra, " That's too coincidental to be a coincidence."

Around here we call that target practice!

I just looked up the news site and now they say it's a copper-fortified satellite that will strike and smash a hole in a nine mile wide Comet Temple 1 and give scientists a glimpse at the frozen, primordial ingredients of the solar system.

That sounds like the new sabot bullet design for blackpowder rifles. I'll have to check out this comet and find out if it doesn't come around every 25 years or so.

I have noticed that in the US barely information is coming in the news whereas in Europe much more is in discussion about this meteor. So just in case you would share some data that would be great.

Where can I get more information on this satellite.  Like you said, "We're going to blow up a meteor and no one even knows about it"  Can't wait for July 4th!

I've got lots to bitch about, I'll stay in touch.

It was on the News July 4th, did you see it?
